Matthew Gilligan – President

As President of Disability RMS, Matt is responsible for the overall operational management of the nation’s leading provider of turnkey disability risk management product and services. With over 25 years of experience in the disability insurance industry, Matt’s leadership has enabled Disability RMS’ continued growth and success, as we have developed into the leading risk management organization.

Matt’s professional experience has been focused on the disability insurance market. His extensive experience includes Sales, Underwriting, Product Development and Claims Management. Prior to joining Disability RMS in 2003, Matt held many leadership positions at Unum, including leading the claims and underwriting organizations, among the largest in the industry.

Matt earned an undergraduate degree from Bates College and an M.B.A. from the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire.

Thomas J. Heckel – Vice President, Actuarial

As Vice President of Actuarial, Tom oversees the management and analysis of one of the largest disability loss experience databases in the industry. Leading a team of experts that provides analytical insights, Tom supports the profitable growth of our clients’ disability business through pricing, valuation, experience analysis, forecasting and overall financial management.

Prior to joining Disability RMS in 2001, Tom gained over 15 years of disability experience working at Unum. His responsibilities included financial management, analysis, planning/reporting, as well as reinsurance administration and strategic planning.

Tom holds a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of Wisconsin. He earned his Fellow of the Society of Actuaries designation in 1989 and is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Kevin J. Tierney – Vice President and General Counsel

As Vice President and General Counsel, Kevin brings over 30 years of experience in the life and disability insurance industry. His philosophy is to deliver high quality, cost effective legal and compliance support services which benefit Disability RMS and our strategic partners.

Prior to joining Disability RMS in 2009, Kevin spent over 20 years working in various positions at Unum, assuming the role of Senior Vice President and General Counsel for eight years. During his tenure at Unum, Kevin was one of the principal architects of Union Mutual’s demutualization and initial public offering. He also played an integral part in the acquisition of Colonial Companies and the merger of Unum and Provident. Following his tenure at Unum, Kevin established a private dispute resolution practice which focused on reinsurance arbitration and mediation. Kevin has also served as an expert witness in insurance and reinsurance litigation.

Kevin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin College and a J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law. He has served on the board of directors of a publicly traded insurance group, a mutual fund and a number of charitable organizations including the Portland Symphony Orchestra and a substance abuse treatment facility for women.

Amy P. Thompson – Vice President, Operations and Human Resources

In her role as Vice President, Operations & Human Resources, Amy plays an integral role in the continued growth and expansion of Disability RMS. As the leader of our FullScope organization, Amy executes on strategies to enable clients to quickly gain entry or increase market share in the employee benefits marketplace. Within Customer Service, Amy utilizes her expertise to create efficient workflows, ensuring we are providing superior client service in a cost effective manner. Amy also leads Human Resources, where she is responsible for all HR and Facilities strategies, policies and processes.

With over 15 years of experience, Amy built the HR function at Disability RMS and is responsible for creating strategies to assemble and maintain a strong bench of talent. Amy played an essential part in Disability RMS’ achievement of being named Best Large Company to Work for in Maine. She also led the team that developed Disability RMS’ Core Values, which serve as the building blocks of our culture.

Prior to joining Disability RMS in 2002, Amy started her career in the disability insurance industry at Unum. While there she worked in claims and later moved into HR in a recruiting role where she developed her workforce management expertise.

Amy earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science as well as an M.B.A. from the University of Maine. She is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management and the Human Resources Association of Southern Maine. Amy serves as the executive chair of our Community Giving Committee, providing grants to organizations in our local area that make a difference for our community, our employees, and our clients.

Kevin G. Tierney – Vice President, Client Management & Business Strategy

In his role as Vice President, Client Management & Business Strategy, Kevin leads the team that strategically partners with clients to cultivate strong and mutually beneficial relationships. Kevin and his team leverage individual client strengths within their chosen markets to maximize results. This enables our clients to be successful by applying the expertise of Disability RMS, developing tailored strategies to meet the individual needs of each client. Joining Disability RMS in 2002, Kevin was instrumental in establishing Disability RMS’ underwriting organization, shaping a unique underwriting philosophy that balances sound risk management with a sales-minded approach towards profitable growth.

Kevin began his career in the insurance and disability business in 1984, as a member of Ernst & Young’s Insurance Practice in Boston, where he provided auditing and consulting services to insurance companies. In 1989, he joined Unum where he held leadership positions within Underwriting and Finance. The majority of Kevin’s time at Unum was spent as the Vice President of Finance and Actuarial for the LTD product line. In this role, Kevin was responsible for all aspects of financial management, including pricing, reserving, analysis, and strategic business planning.

Kevin holds a bachelor’s degree from Merrimack College and is a non-practicing Certified Public Accountant. Kevin serves on the Board of Directors for the Cape Elizabeth Little League and is an active volunteer in youth sports.

Gabriel D. House – Vice President, Underwriting

As Vice President, Underwriting, Gabe oversees the development of unique growth and profit strategies for each of our clients. Gabe effectively manages risk selection, as well as establishing and managing Disability RMS’ Underwriting policies and practices. Since joining Disability RMS in 1999, Gabe has held various management positions in the Underwriting organization. In these roles, he developed a keen knowledge of each client’s markets and goals. Gabe and his underwriting team formulate block strategies for over $400 million in street premium, tailored for each client. As a worksite expert, Gabe is a leading authority in creating successful worksite strategies.

Gabe has more than 15 years of experience in the insurance industry, of which the majority has been focused on the disability insurance market. Prior to joining Disability RMS, Gabe began his career as an Underwriter with Unum. While there, he gained an in depth understanding of short term and long term disability underwriting.

Gabe holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Bates College. Gabe serves as co-executive chair of our Community Involvement Committee, leading DRMS employees in many volunteer initiatives that make a difference for our community, our employees, and our clients.

Kathleen M. Serunian – Vice President, Claims

Kathy is the most tenured employee of Disability RMS and was present for our first claim in 1994.  As the founder of our claims organization, Kathy provides strategic and operational leadership of the claims organization which is recognized as one of the best in the industry. In her role as Vice President of Claims, Kathy leverages our expert resources and infrastructure to deliver superior claims risk management services.

Kathy has 30 years of group disability insurance experience.  She started her insurance industry career with Unum Reinsurance where she held various claims management positions.  Within the reinsurance industry, Kathy is recognized as an expert.  She has shared her knowledge as a speaker at industry conferences as well as through the publication of articles in trade magazines.

Kathy is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, with a bachelor’s degree in education.  She is a member of the Claims Advisory Committee for The Council for Disability Awareness, is an active member of the New England Claims Association and the International Claims Association, and is on The Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine. Kathy holds all required Third Party state licenses.

Lisa D. Philbrick – Vice President, Claims

As Vice President, Claims, Lisa is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of our claims organization. Systematically leveraging resources to provide timely integrated solutions, Lisa enables our clients to realize their operational objectives. She led the entry of Disability RMS into the Administrative Services Only (ASO) market, utilizing our claims management expertise. Lisa expanded our capabilities into additional markets, including credit disability, group life, and life waiver of premium. As Disability RMS has further developed worksite capabilities, Lisa has played an integral role, leading the acquisition and integration of worksite benefits and billing solutions.

With close to 30 years of industry experience, Lisa is a worksite claims expert whose strength is in creating strategies for large-scale client and service implementations. Prior to joining Disability RMS in 2002, Lisa held a variety of claims management positions at Unum within the Group Life and Long Term Disability units.

Lisa attended the University of Southern Maine and Husson College. She holds all required Third Party Administrator state licenses. Lisa serves as co-executive chair of our Community Involvement Committee, leading DRMS employees in many volunteer initiatives that make a difference for our community, our employees, and our clients.

JT Perry – Vice President, Information Technology

As Vice President, Information Technology, JT oversees the development of state-of-the-art tools and systems, providing integrated technology solutions that enable the organization to provide superior service.

JT joined Disability RMS as part of the acquisition of Administrative Systems in 2009 and has played an integral role in developing our administration and billing solutions. Leveraging his extensive insurance administration experience, JT develops and executes strategies to modernize and enhance our technology infrastructure. JT has led the development of many capabilities including a robust commission calculation and payment system.

With over 20 years of experience in technology, JT has held various roles in both software development and infrastructure including leading development efforts at technology startups. JT began his technology career in the US Navy working within Submarine Special Projects.
